Case Study:
Potomac Interceptor Project
Client
Local Water Authority
Problem
The existing infrastructure was deteriorating, so it was replaced with a new concrete interceptor and preventatively lined with SprayWall to protect from the harsh sewer environment.
Solution
The preventative application of SprayWall to new assets assures its operational longevity through protection from structural damage and corrosion.
Potomac Interceptor
Situation:
The Potomac Interceptor serves as a crucial junction where the sanitary sewer flows from Dulles and Western Loudoun County converge with those from Montgomery County. This project, vital for the DC area, involves abandoning a severely deteriorated segment of the sewer system and constructing a new concrete interceptor chamber to handle the flows more effectively.
The existing infrastructure was facing significant deterioration and inefficiency, posing a risk to the environment and the surrounding community’s health. The challenge was to replace the old infrastructure without disrupting the ongoing sewer flow and to ensure the new system would withstand future demands and environmental stresses.
Solution:
The local water authority selected Sprayroq’s SprayWall for its proven effectiveness in structural enhancement and corrosion protection. Abel Recon, a trusted contractor and Sprayroq-certified partner (SCP), was tasked with the application process. SprayWall was chosen for its rapid curing time, strong adhesion, and long-term durability, making it ideal for this high-demand environment.
The interceptor chambers are being preventatively coated with SprayWall to ensure that this new infrastructure remains protected against corrosion and deterioration from the start. The application process involves highly skilled and experienced technicians from Abel Recon meticulously spraying the lining to achieve an even and robust coating throughout the chambers.
Results:
While the project is scheduled for completion in June 2025, the application of SprayWall has already shown promising results in terms of ease of application and minimal disruption to local services. The benefits expected upon completion include:
Enhanced Durability: The interceptor will have increased resistance to environmental and chemical stresses like Hydrogen Sulfide.
Longevity: SprayWall’s properties ensure that the new interceptor chambers will require minimal maintenance and have a prolonged service life.
Cost Efficiency: By opting for preventative maintenance, the local water authority is likely to save on future repair and replacement costs.
